26, 2007) |
|
|
|
|
Novitiation Ceremony is the unique characteristic in
Myanmar. This ceremony usually celebrates during the school holidays,
mostly in summer holidays at March & April before the water festival. In
the Myanmar tradition the boys are compulsory to enter the Buddhist
order for a week or more.
In the Myanmar Buddhist tradition it is compulsory that every boys over
eight years old to twenty have to enter the Buddhist Order for a week or
more as a novice and over twenty they have to enter the Order again as
Ordained Monk. At least enter twice as Novice and sometimes even more.
They stay at a monastery whether there are meditation sessions or not,
is not considered a hardship because it is a blessing for the whole
family as well as for the boys themselves. Novitiation is the obligation
for every parent, rich or poor, since it is believe to be a great
meritorious deed which could prevent them to be at the evil realm. |

AN ANCIENT CITY, SAGA
(March
21, 2007) |
|
Becoming one of the most interesting sites in Inlay
District is SAGA at the moment. It is situated in Southern Shan State,
Nyaung Shwe. Inlay lake is naturally famous for its extra ordinary ways
of life: leg rowing, floating Island Planting and of its many other
features. And now, SAGA, a very artistic city with many ancient pagodas
and timeworn architectural designs comes to allure visitors' mind as
they have extra time to visit around Inlay district. On the way to SAGA,
minority groups of Shan: Pao, Intha, and shan who live in the stilted
houses, their handiwork and their ways of life can be seen apparently.
The trips for SAGA have been commenced since 2003 and mainly paid visit
by the German, French and Italian visitors and other nature lovers. It
is a nice place to visit all the year round but July to February is the
most preferable seasons! |

THE LEGACY OF MYANMAR GLAZED CERAMICS (February
21, 2007) |
|
|
In Myanmar, the earthenware pottery, without
using potter's wheel was produced since 11,000 years ago though
the ancient glazed artifacts of Bagan were found around in 9th
centaury AD. The Proto Myanmar, Pyu, Bhama which was known as
Tibetho- Burman were believed to live in Kansu, the northwest
China region where the painted pottery culture existed during
the Neolithic period. Pyu Migrated into Myanmar at about 5th
Century BC. In those days, the Southeast Asia glazed ceramic
historians were less interest in Myanmar due to the scarcity of
ancient Kiln-sites and glazed wares.
After some green and white glazed wares (celadon) which were
confirm that of Myanmar origin, popped up in Tak area near
Thai-Myanmar border in1984, the history of Southeast Asia glazed
ceramics would not be complete without the contribution from
Myanmar.
The Myanmar Ceramics Society (MCS) traced on this evidence and
discovered nearly a thousand numbers of old Kiln-sites in
Myanmar and rightly declared the position of Myanmar Ceramics
which started as far backs as 5th Century AD. Now we can see
this traditional Kiln site and new technology of Myanmar Pottery
combination at Twante. |

NAWARAT
KOEPAR OR THE NINE ROYAL GEMS (January 1, 2007) |
This is a set of the assemblage of the royal nine gems in
the ring which is called “nawarat koepar” ring that included
ruby, diamond, pearl, coral, topaz, sapphire, moonstone,
zircon, and emerald. This ring is exclusively worn by men.
It is done by the instruction of the astrologer at the most
auspicious time for the sake of good luck for those who wear
it. An arrangement of nine gems in proper order is revealing
the pure and nobility. The nine gems are always set in the
same order: the ruby in the middle, the diamond at the top
center, then clockwise, follows the pearl, the coral, the
topaz, the sapphire, the moonstone, the zircon, and end with
emerald. These gems represent a symbol of glory and nobility
such as the ruby stands for glory, the diamond for dignity,
the pearl for grace, the coral for power, and the sapphire
for love, the moonstone for perfection, the zircon for
strength and the emerald for peace. It has been deeply
believed in wearing these nine gems in a circular design as
the good lucky charisma since the time of Myanmar Kings’
reign. |

flower festival, the cooperation of the ministry of forestry and
the Woodland group of Companies, will be held in coming December

An upcoming festival will feature about 500,000 foreign and
domestic plants including some rare species in Myanmar such as
Tulips, Lilies, Begonias, Gebara daisies and Cymbidium Orchids.
The demonstrations of growing plants practically and
entertainment programs like funfairs and stage-shows will be

national park after upgrading from Botanical garden in 2001. |
|
THAZAUNGDAING FESTIVAL (October 31, 2006) |
Why
thee houses are so bright? The light is illuminated on every
houses and roads. Cause this is the eight month of Myanmar
calendar; also the time of festivities and donation activities
to celebrate. This is also end of the monsoon. So all the
jollity and marry - making would take the peoples minds away
from mischief; a kind of psychological warfare. People hang out
lighted lanterns in honour of the Buddha`s decent from the
celestials region. Illuminations are more elaborate than in
Thadingyut.
One important ceremony associated with the season is the
offering of the new yellow robes to the monks. The robes offer
to the monks is called the Ka-htein robes. The most distinct
festival of the Ka -htein, the weaving of the non-stale robes
contest, they are woven within the space of the night, is gala
celebration enjoyed by young and old. An annual weaving contest
is held on the platform of Shwedagone pagoda, under the glare of
the electric lights on the fullmoon day.
Hey! The night after the fullmoon day is fanciful for the
youngmen! It is the wont of the youths to steal things like
flower pots and clothes and pile them at the cross roads, sign
boards would be put at the door of privies, they also hoist
women`s skirt at the top of the pole. In the morning, everyone
has a good laugh. In small towns and villages, where the people
know one another, this is done in the spirit of fun. No serious
harms is done and no one is offended for it.
Do you want a pa-de-tha tree, the wonder tree that bears all the
things that the human heart could wish? Myanmar people have been
believed that the pa-de-tha tree had been grown and later it
disappeared because of the greedy people. One rule the human
must obey was that no one must take more than he could use at
one time.
In this season of Dazaungdaing festivals, we can see the pa-de-tha
tree is back, hung with things like packets of yellow robes and
other gifts, like a Christmas tree in order to donate to the
sangha in progress. Actually people enjoying themselves, as if
there had been grown real pe-da-tha trees of olden times. People
believe that they would reborn in the land where such trees
grow. This is offered to the monk at the end of the lent and it
is the time when they will be in need of robes and other
articles of need. The pa-de-tha tree cannot be planted by
expert, but it can only be nurtured by acts of dhana. Thus
Thazaungmonge (between october and november) is the special
occasion for the Myanmar people to enjoy with the deed in the
right spirit

THADINGYUT
LIGHTING FESTIVAL (October 6, 2006) |
Thadingyut
lighting festival is one of the gala occasions for Buddhists in
Myanmar. It is magnificently held in October all the whole
country. In fact, it is the grandeur of Buddhists and the most
magnificent religious festival in Myanmar.
From the religious point of view, history of Thadingyut is as
followed. Lord Buddha usually goes to celestial abroad to
address to his mother as the repayment of gratitude during three
months of Lent. Mother of Bodhisattva passes away a week later
after birth of Bodhisattva and is reborn in celestial abroad as
celestial being.
When Buddha and 500hundred of ascetics come back to human abroad
on full moon day of Thadingyut after preaching three months, all
of Human beings, Spirits and Braham welcome the Lord Buddha and
his followers with bright light. This is the start of the
festival and from that time on, people light the candle,
electric light and colorful lanterns at Thadingyut Festival.
October is the month of Thadingyut according to the Myanmar
calendar. This festival is held for 3 days (eve full moon day,
full moon day and after full moon day). Especially, on the full
moon day of Thadingyut, lighting festival is grandly and
brightly held at any pagoda in Myanmar. For this year, it is
held from 5th to 7th of October.
During the period of Thadingyut Festival, all Buddhists taking
cakes, fruits and so many things go and pay respect to grandpa,
grandma, father, mother, elders, superiors, uncle and aunt. And
also, not only adults but children take part in this festival
very happily by setting off the fireworks and balloons. The
streets are brightly decorated with lighting candle and paper
lanterns. Moreover, Thadingyut Festival is also the time to
start dry weather and people begin to hold the festivals, Pwe
(opera) and entertainment together with fine weather.
And there are two distinctive characters of this festival: Young
people prepare to hold wedding reception as soon as the full
moon day is over and people start to move houses as they are
prohibited during lent. Thus, why don't you enjoy it if your
visit to Myanmar is coincident with Thadingyut Festival?
